A Series of Unexpected Events: Ch 5

You know, it's funny...I thought I had already posted this back in May I think...but then I realized last month when I was going through my files on my laptop that I didn't get the chance to post this. I know when I started this last year...my intention was to post this one frequently...but then again, when do I ever go according to plan...so...I apologize for that. Anyways...if you need to refresh yourself...just click on the label 'A Series of Unexpected Events' and you'll get yourself all the chapters I have posted.

Enjoy!
======================

A Simple Mind

Character: Charmaine:

My name is Charmaine. I have a little big brother named Him, little because I think he’s younger than me and big because he’s taller than me. My little big brother takes care of me, and has to work many different jobs to take care of me. Sometimes, I feel so useless because I seem to cause him more trouble than he can handle...but I can’t help it. I’m still little...even though I’m supposed to be his big sister. This is getting confusing. I think I should talk about something else. Let’s see...oh...Dr. Lam. He’s amazing. He’s always smiling and happy but I don’t think he’s happy on the inside. He always seems to have a lot on his mind. But because I’m his patient he always makes time for me, and he always smiles for me.

Dr Lam tells me I’m special every time I go and see him...and he sometimes even takes me out on walks, or to the mall. One time, he even bought me a pretty dress. Dr. Lam is the best!

But my brother doesn’t seem to think that it’s right for me to spend too much time with Dr. Lam...he says that Dr. Lam has other patients that needs his attention just as much. But, I don’t think that to Dr. Lam I’m just his patient...I’m...well...I’m like his little friend. Ya...that’s right, I’m his little friend!

Him: Hurry up sis, we’re going to be late if you don’t hurry

Charmaine: wait...I’m just putting on the bow that Dr. Lam bought me a few weeks ago

Him: What did I tell you about accepting gifts from him?

Charmaine: It’s just a clip...with a pretty bow on it...see?

Charmaine showed her brother the bow while having a great big smile plastered on her face

Him: Well...I wouldn’t wear it

Charmaine nudged her brother: Don’t be silly...you’re not a girl...even I know that

Him chuckled: Yes, yes, my sister is very smart

Charmaine: Of course...that’s why I have such a smart little big brother

Him laughed: Ok, come on now...let’s go...mom and dad are waiting for us

Charmaine: Oh, alright...I hope mommy likes my outfit and the pretty bow (she smiled)

Him: I think mom will love it

Character: Him

Today, eleven years ago, our parents died leaving my sister and me behind. At that moment, I thought my world ended, I thought that there’s no point anymore...no point in doing anything. But my sister, she got me through it all. She held back the tears, held the funeral and took care of me. I was merely a teenager, and my sister, well...she wasn’t that much older than I was...actually, she was only 19, yet she had to take care of everything. Everything. Watching her bear it all, I told myself that I had to become stronger, and when I’m older I would take care of her. Little did I know that, that was exactly what had happened.

Now, I’m the one taking care of my sister. And now I understand what she had to go through to take care of me years ago. I know that it would take a miracle for her to be back to her old self...but I still secretly wish and pray for that every night.

Maybe, the spirits of our parents will help her...regain her ability, regain her memory, and be the strong, independent woman that she used to be...

Charmaine: Him...

Him: What is it?

Charmaine heaved a sigh: Do you think...I’ll ever be normal again?

Him: Why are you asking that? You are normal

Charmaine: Don’t try to make me feel better...if I’m normal, I wouldn’t have to see the doctor all the time...and...

Him: Don’t be silly...so what if you have to see the doctor, everyone sees a doctor

Charmaine: But Him...people look at me funny...

Him: Who dares look at my big sister like that?

Charmaine: A lot of people...I was looking at my ID...and realized...I’m not seven...but I’m 35...that’s five times seven

Him: I thought we’ve already had this talk...you had an accident...so, you don’t remember things like you used to...and that’s why you go see Dr. Lam...hopefully he’ll help you get better

Charmaine: I know...but I just wish I could get better right now...so when we go see mom and dad...they’ll see the daughter that they saw before they went to heaven

Him hugged his sister: I think they’re already seeing her

Charmaine smiled: Really?

Him nodded: So can we go now?

Charmaine: Of course

~ Two days later~

Him: I’ll be back in an hour to pick you up ok?

Charmaine: Ok...but where are you going?

Him: I need to pick up the dry cleaning for my boss...

Charmaine: Oh...ok

Him: Be good

Charmaine laughed: When am I not good?

Him smiled and left his sister sitting there in the waiting area. Moments later, Macy came by and guided Charmaine into Raymond’s office.

Raymond: So, anything interesting happened over the last few days?

Charmaine: A couple of days ago, Him took me to see our parents

Raymond: Is that so?

Charmaine nodded: Yup...and I even wore the clip you got me, the one with the bow

Raymond: Oh...that’s great

Charmaine: But...Dr. Lam...I think you should stop buying me things

Raymond: And why is that?

Charmaine: You don’t buy things for your other patients

Raymond: Can’t I treat you differently?

Charmaine shook her head: Then that’s not fair to everyone else...and besides, I think I’m too old for bows

Raymond: What do you mean?

Charmaine: I’m already 30...Dr. Lam...I really want to get better...I want to be like my brother...I don’t think that it’s fair for him to have to take care of me...

Raymond: I see...(he smiled) I think it’s time for us to look at other ways to help you get better then...but I would need to consult with your brother

Charmaine: So...you’re saying that...one day I could be working like my brother?

Raymond nodded: Maybe...if that’s what you want

Charmaine nodded excitedly: That would be great...then I can wear a beautiful dress...and maybe even get married

Raymond smiled: I think you’d look lovely in a wedding dress

Charmaine: A beautiful white wedding dress...with lace...

Raymond chuckled: Sure

Charmaine: Yay! And then...I’ll be married to prince charming...and we’ll live happily ever after
