Valentine's Special: Part Three: Finale

Yes, here it is...what a few of you have been waiting for =D Hope you like it.

V-day Part III

~ Valentine’s Day~

It seemed as though everything that had happened yesterday was a blur...all he could recall was moping around at home and then being told to go to the airport to pick up an old friend...

Ron continued to lie in bed until his phone started vibrating. He reached for his phone and realized that it was a text from a colleague from the hospital reminding him that they were going to have a meeting regarding one of their patients later in the day. At that moment it had occurred to him that he had agreed to meet up with Leila in the evening...and how yesterday she had told him how she felt about him five years ago. How could he have been so oblivious to the way she treated him...and to her feelings towards him. Being a doctor required such great analytical skills that he was dumbfounded.

He knew he couldn’t miss the meeting, for it was his responsibility, however, he couldn’t cancel his evening with Leila either. The only thing to do was to tell her that he would be late for their get together.

~ on the phone~

Leila: Ron?

Ron: hey, I just wanted to let you know that I might be a bit late for our little get together this evening...how about I meet you at the bar we were at a few Christmases ago around 8?

Leila: Sure...about yesterday...

Ron: ya?

Leila: I was a bit tired and came on a little too strong...I hope you don’t mind

Ron: what? It’s fine...actually...it was a bit flattering

Leila laughed: of course it was flattering, having someone as lovely as I have a crush on you

Ron: I was such an idiot back then...anyways, I need to get going...I’ll see you tonight

Leila: See you then

~end ~

Ron was now heading to the hospital to go over a few things before the meeting. The hospital was lightly decorated with Valentine decorations and of course Lunar New Year decorations...a mix of western and traditional. Ron made his way to his department and greeted a few of the nurses on the way.

Nurse: Dr. Ng, aren’t you a bit early for the meeting?

Ron: I thought I’d come in to check on our patient...and go through a few things before the meeting

Nurse: Well if that’s the case, I’ll leave you to it...oh, your girlfriend called earlier

The word girlfriend was now resonating through his head.

Nurse: She left a message, here (she handed Ron a note)

He didn’t understand what was going on...just days ago they had broken up, and now she left him a message.

Ron: Uh...thanks...

The nurse walked away as Ron walked into his office and unfolded the piece of paper that the nurse had handed to him. All that was scribbled down was “call me back – Linda Chung” He didn’t understand why she wanted to talk to him, afterall it was her who wanted the break-up. But regardless of the reason he felt that it was only right for him to call her...and so he did. To his astonishment she wanted to meet up with him, tonight...and being the weak-hearted guy Ron was, he agreed to meet her at the restaurant where they had their first date...which coincidentally was just across the street from the bar he was going to meet Leila at.

~ hours later~

The meeting had gone quite smoothly, the patient that he was treating didn’t seem to have any complications and so Ron left the hospital and headed to the restaurant to meet up with Linda. Questions of why she had even called him and asked him out on a day like today were zooming around in his head as he drove. At the traffic lights where he stopped, he noticed the many couples walking on the street hand in hand, with bright smiles that could literally light up and city.

Now, parking his car outside the restaurant, he saw her sitting there, sipping on her what should be black coffee. She used to tell him how she loved the aroma of it, and only from drinking it black can she experience its true taste. This was totally different Leila who always liked her coffee with two creams and two sugars...and how she used to tell him that she liked the smell, but couldn’t stand it when it’s too strong.

Getting out of his car and walking into the restaurant...Ron reminisced about the first time he came here...it wasn’t with Linda, no, it was with Leila. A friend of theirs had recommended this restaurant and so they both agreed to give it a try. Ron never would’ve imagined that one day he would also take his girlfriend here, nor be asked to come to talk about his failed relationship with his ex-girlfriend. What a small world...

Walking towards her table, he noticed that she didn’t exactly look happy. He always found her so easy to read...everything that she felt would be shown on her face, and so when she wanted to break up...he also knew it was coming. Even though he seemed to be the type to have great observation skills, there are just some people he could never read...

Linda: Hi

Ron: Hi...

Linda: It’s been a while since we went here together...

Ron: Ya...I was a bit surprised that you still remembered this place...

Linda: I couldn’t possibly have forgotten where we had our very first date...

Ron: You looked absolutely stunning that night...and you look wonderful tonight...

Linda smiled: Thanks...you look kind of tired...a lot of things to take care of?

Ron: Not really...it’s just I haven’t been getting any decent sleep...my mind won’t stop thinking...

Linda: I’m sorry...I was really emotional that day and...

Ron: I get it, it’s ok...you deserve someone who not only loves you, but will be there for you...and I don’t think I actually fit that description

Linda looked at him: But...you do. It’s just sometimes I wanted more than to have you a phone call away, I wanted more than to just be able to see you during your lunch breaks and...there was a lot on my mind...seeing all my friends telling me stories of their relationships...I didn’t feel like ours was going anywhere...

Ron: Sorry...I should’ve known better...I knew you were feeling a bit insecure about our relationship...but I didn’t know it was...

Linda: It’s not your fault Ron...I should’ve thought things through before agreeing to go out with you...but I guess it’s too late now...

Ron looked down at his watch...he couldn’t believe how quickly time was passing by...

Ron: is it?

Linda: Seems to me like you’re going to meet up with someone...

Ron: Well, just an old friend...someone I haven’t actually spent time with in a long time...

Linda: On Valentine’s Day?

Ron nodded

Linda: let me guess...your friend likes her coffee with two creams and two sugars, she likes her bubble tea with half tapioca and half jelly, her favourite animal is the penguin and she’s been working in Australia for a while now...

Ron: Do you two know each other?

Linda shook her head: I guess you never once realized how much you tell me about her when we spend time together...strange isn’t it? Sometimes I feel as though you don’t know that much about me at all...and that never mind...

Ron: What do you mean? I know you like your coffee black because you like it in its purest form and the smell is ‘breathtaking’

Linda: Do you know why I never drink it with cream, or have milk teas?

Ron: Because you like things simple and in its purest form...you don’t want anything to cover up its genuine taste...

Linda: Why else?

Ron: why else?

Linda: I’m lactose intolerant...

Ron muttered: lactose intolerant...that totally slipped my mind

Linda smiled: It’s ok...we’ve only been together for so long...

Ron: I must be the worst boyfriend in the world

Linda: You’re not...you were nice and caring, romantic...I’ll miss being the lucky lady that calls you her boyfriend...

She stood up and Ron followed suit...he looked at her and the moments that they had shared in the past flooded his mind...and he had to admit...she was beautiful, more beautiful than any recent Miss Chinese International...

Ron: Linda...I’ll miss you...let’s...keep in touch, ok?

Linda: Of course

At that moment, he leaned in and kissed her passionately as a last goodbye and the both of them walked out of the restaurant towards their own destinations without one another.

Ron crossed the street and went into the bar to meet up with Leila. He was about five minutes late and noticed Leila sitting there surrounded by a couple of lonely men trying to hit on her. He approached her slowly and eventually all those men disappeared.

Leila: Not a moment too soon

Ron smiled: Sorry, I’m a bit late

Leila: Not a problem

The fact was that she saw him earlier, across the street talking to Linda and of course she saw the goodbye kiss he gave Linda. At that moment her heart was beating rapidly and it felt as though her eyes were getting watery but being the type of person she was, she was completely fine and came to the bar.

Ron: Happy Valentine’s Day

Leila: Happy Valentine’s Day...

Ron: Where are my chocolates?

Leila: What do you mean by YOUR chocolates? Shouldn’t I be getting chocolates from you?

Ron: You asked me to be your valentine

Leila: And you should feel honoured...you don’t know the number of men who would like to be my valentine

Ron: Is that so?

Leila: Of course!

Ron: well then...I guess I’ll leave

Leila: Fine! You can call your girlfriend back

Ron: What girlfriend?

Leila: I saw the two of you across the street...the two of you make a cute couple

Ron: We broke up...

Leila: But I saw you two kissing

Ron: it was a goodbye kiss...

Leila: But...why...

Ron: She told me why we broke up...and...It was because of you

Leila: Me? Yes, just shove the blame onto me...

Ron chuckled: She told me how I didn’t understand and how she wanted me to be with her for more than just an hour a day...

Leila: And what does that have to do with me?

Ron: Well, it’s because when I’m with her...I’d tell her stories about us...back then...the things you liked, the things we did, the times we spent together...making her feel as though in my heart, she isn’t the only one there...

Leila: I guess you really missed me...

Ron: I guess I did...I’m glad you’re back...even if it’s only for a few weeks...and for some strange reason...I think I’ll continue to miss you once you go back...even though you’re a bit egocentric, talkative and...

Leila: And?

Ron: A tad bit vertically challenged...

Leila laughed: You make it sound as though you’re really tall...

Ron: Taller than you

Leila lightly punched him on the arm

Ron smiled and then looked at her intently: Remember what you told me yesterday...I was wondering if it’s a bit too late to ask you to stay now...

Leila looked at him: It’s not

Ron: then...can you please not go back...I don’t want to have to miss you so much that I unconsciously talk about you all the time and I don’t want to us to spend all of our time together catching up on things, but rather making new memories...

Leila: Actually...I was going to tell you tonight that...my company transferred me back here...so...I guess we could spend some time making new memories and so you’d probably have more about me to talk about

Ron looked at her: If that’s the case, I don’t think anyone would marry me...if all I’m ever going to talk about is you...so...I’ll hold you responsible...

Leila laughed: What’s that supposed to mean?

Ron smiled: It means that...one day...you could become Mrs. Ron Ng...

Leila: Is that so?

Ron: Ya...

He leaned in and gave her a peck on the forehead
